We are now approaching two weeks since the start of the 2023 NFL league year and not surprisingly, veteran quarterback Mitch Trubisky remains under contract with the team despite being scheduled to earn $8 million this coming season. On Sunday, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin spoke ahead of the annual NFL owners meetings in Arizona and he indicated that he expects Trubisky to remain with the team for the 2023 season.

Like Omar Khan at the NFL Combine, Mike Tomlin also says he expects Mitch Trubisky back for for the 2023 season. Trubisky is a free agent in 2024.

Re: third QB, Tomlin says he doesn’t know the plan at this point, but they’ll sort it out.

According to Brooke Pryor of ESPN on Sunday, Tomlin, just as Steelers general manager Omar Khan did a few weeks ago at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, said he expects Trubisky back for the 2023 season. Trubisky, who was the team’s starter for the first four games of the 2022 season, is not currently under contract past the 2023 season as March comes to an end.

Dating back to January when Steelers team president Art Rooney II held his annual end-of-the-season media sessions, the sense has been that Trubisky would remain with the team throughout the 2023 season. At the combine, Khan echoed Rooney’s sentiments and went as far as to say that the hope is that Trubisky might even be around longer than just this coming season.

There have been no indications yet that the Steelers will sign Trubisky to a contract extension this offseason. That said, there’s still plenty of time for such a transaction to happen should both sides be willing to make that a summer goal.

Currently, the Steelers only have two quarterbacks under contract for the 2023 season in Kenny Pickett and Trubisky despite the team usually liking to have four by the start of training camp. According to Tomlin on Sunday via Pryor, Tomlin said while he doesn’t know the plan at this point when it comes to a third-string quarterback, the team will sort it out at some point.

Last year, the Steelers selected quarterback Chris Oladokun in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft but they moved on from him by the start of the regular season after not giving him many snaps during training camp and none in the preseason. The Steelers third-string quarterback last season, Mason Rudolph, is currently an unsigned unrestricted free agent this offseason and not expected to re-sign with the team.
